Metabolomics – the study of metabolites and low‐molecular‐weight intermediate molecules – provides the support for deepening and strengthening the understanding of the basic processes of living organisms. Metabolomics has established itself as a useful complement to the characterization of pathologies because it allows the identification of critical metabolic pathways involved in biochemical processes. NMR‐based metabolomics offers evident advantages over the knowledge‐guided search of metabolites. In fact, the dynamic, simultaneous assessment of thousands of metabolites allows the definition of a physiopathological‐related metabolic fingerprint through the statistical analysis of NMR profiles.
