Friedrich Bickelhaupt obtained his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Tübingen in 1957. After a postdoctoral period (University of New Brunswick, Canada and Harvard University, USA) he joined the research laboratories of Boehringer-Mannheim. In 1964, he was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam; since 1997, he is professor emeritus. Research interests are in the fields of organometallic chemistry, of low coordination chemistry in groups 14 and 15, in valence isomers of benzene and small cyclophanes, and previously also in synthesis and biosynthesis of natural products; this resulted in the publication of 400 papers. Awards: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellowship; Max Planck Research Price. He served as chairman of the Department of Chemistry, as dean of the Faculty of Science, as member of the Executive Board of the Vrije Universiteit, as member of the Academy Commission for Chemistry, as chairman of the Holland Research School of Molecular Chemistry, and as member of the Executive Board of the Netherlands Foundation for Chemical Research. He is or has been member of the editorial boards of several international journals in the field of chemistry.
