Different Types
of Microscopes
There are many different types of microscopes and many ways to group them
(see Figure 3.1). One way is to have a look at how the image is created.
This can be by sending a beam of light or electrons to the sample, by scanning
across, or even by using X-rays. The most common microscope is the optical
microscope, which uses visual light passing through a sample to produce an
image (which is accordingly called a light microscope). Other types of microscopes
are confocal, electron or X-ray microscopes.
