CHAPTER 6 Well Integrated: HCM in the Hospital IT Landscape 61
In order to do justice to either direction of the data stream, an HCM system must
be equipped with the following interfaces:
✔✔ IHE-XDS: The transactions of the IHE-XDS profile enable the retrieval and
retransmission of documents and metadata using web interfaces.
Clinical users primarily work in the HIS. In order to support this working
method as well as possible, the multi-format viewer of the HCM system is
integrated into the user interface of the HIS or invoked from within it.
✔✔Embedding of the multi-format viewer via a parameterizable hyperlink
(with identification of the patient/case/document/authorization-relevant
information).
Document Management System (DMS)
If an institution operates a document management system (DMS) that also
houses medical data (for information on the areas of application, strengths and
weaknesses of a DMS, see Chapter 3), exchanging data between this system and
the HCM system should also be possible. The transfer of documents from the
DMS to the HCM system is done in particular for the purpose of enabling access
to all medical data across the whole hospital or even across all facilities via a multi
format viewer. Most medical DMS can transfer documents via HL7 MDM or
via transactions of the IHE-XDS profile. Accordingly, the HCM system requires
the following interfaces (see Figure 6.3).
✔✔ reception of HL7 MDM messages
✔✔ reception via IHE-XDS
